Where does one’s breath end and another’s begin, when does breath become air, are we breathing or being breathed?
Connected By Breath is an immersive and interactive installation that explores the relationship between breath and our sense of ‘self’ and the connection between individual, collective, and historical experiences of air.
The challenges we face as a species appear to be underlined by a general crisis of connection: a disconnection to ourselves, to each other and to the world. In a time when the breath of many is threatened by issues related to the ecological crisis, racism, illnesses and the pandemic, Connected By Breath invites us to reflect on our interdependent roles in a shared ecology of air that connects us all across space and time. It appears urgent that we reconsider our collective experience of air in terms of what and how we breathe - so that we may embody afresh our next breath in the dance of interdependence and connection we are all part of.
Connected By Breath takes the audience on an introspective and shared journey through space, light, sound and technology. With real-time physiological data streaming and visualisation, the experience takes place in an immersive space that responds to the growing accumulation of the individual experiences of visitors. The public is invited to become aware and explore breath in its manifold appearance, and the role it plays in shaping our personal and shared realities.
A project by visual artists Francesca Lando (Immuto) and Catherine Leo with neuroscientist Christopher Timmermann (Imperial College London) - in collaboration with Centre for Psychedelic Research at Imperial College London and EcoH - foundation for Human Consciousness Research.
